TONIA:  RAGE OF THE SEA

A NAVAL BASE ON NANTUCKET ISLAND:

SCENE OPENS ON A TEAM OF DOCTORS AND A MARINE BIOLOGIST DISCUSSING THE LATEST NUCLEAR NAVAL TRANSFER PROJECT.

Inside an aquarium, a large gray fish lay motionless at the bottom, it's eyes almost void of life, stare hazily at the people in the room.

(A middle aged male doctor, confers with a younger, female colleague while eating his sandwich)

Doctor

(munching)  The issue now is weather we can save that baby inside her... (looks at the aquarium)  The chances of Malay pulling through at this stage of the game are almost non existant...

Woman

But there's still a chance, Dr. Burns, and so long as there's still a chance...

(A computer recording the rate at which the great fish's heart beats stops suddenly)

Woman

Malay!  (rushing over to the machine to administer a shock into the fish)

Dr. Burns

(looking at the unrevived fish)  It's no use.  She is not responding...

(On the operating table the doctors are removing the unborn fetus from Malay and transport it to a life support system)

Dr. Burns

(to a fellow colleague)  I think he's gonna make it...  (he smiles)

(Three weeks later, Dr. Kelbert Zuke is performing an operation on the premature half whale, half dolphin, the inserting of a micro computer in it's brain.  Upon completion of task, Dr. Zuke removes his gloves and mask..)

Dr.Zuke

If all goes as it should, we are looking at the answer to nuclear transportation.

(SCENE SWITCHES TO ONE OF THE 3 OTHER DOCTORS)

1st Doctor

Not to mention all the other capabilites.  That micro computer gives him access to human education of all levels...

Dr. Zuke

If you'll excuse me now.  I must play the part of an Assprin and ease the headaches of our high officals in Wasington.  (he heads for the phone)  General Penlowe!  Kelbert Zuke here.

(IN WASHINGTON A FAT BURLY GENERAL SITS BEHIND HIS DESK EATING CHOCLATES WHILE HE IS SPEAKING ON THE PHONE)

Penlowe

Yes Doctor Zeus!  I trust you bring me good news!

Zuke

The operation so far is a success.  Our next step is to call in that marine biologist, Jolly Green.

Penlowe

(He puts a chocolate in his mouth)  Good, you do that.  Whatever it takes to make that fish, as good as his mother was!  (the general hangs up as he bites into another chocolate and spits it out he presses the phone intercom)  Peplinski!  Get in here!

(Enter Peplinski his male secretary)

Peplinski

Sir!

Penlowe

(Holds out the box of chocolates)  Here!  Eat one!

Peplinski

Hmm!  Very tasty sir.

Penlowe

What am I asking you for?  You are't a chocolate connoisseur!  Send them back and for the tenth time, no more burnt coconut!  Take these away...  And get me the President on the phone.

Peplinski

Yes sir.   (taking the box from the general)

Penlowe

Just a minute...  (he takes one more chocolate and tries to pop it in his mouth but it falls...)   Shit!  (he picks it up and puts it on his desk. As Peplinski leaves he eats it)

MONTREAL:  THE AQURIAM AT "lARONDE" ON ILE Ste HELEN A YOUNG WOMAN FROM PARIS A MARIE BIOLIGIST TRANING A COUPLE OF DOLPHINS.

(Enter a courier...)

Courier

Ms. Jolly Green?

Biologist

Yes?

Courier

Telegram.

(She reads the telegram and heads for the phone and then she left for the airport)

TWO DAYS LATER JOLLY IS AT THE AQURIUM, WHERE THE NEW BORN TONIA IS DISPLAYED TO THE VARIOUS PEOPLE, INVOLVED WITH THE PROJECT JOLLY, IS INTRODUCED TO SEVERAL OF THE PEOPLE AND THEN SHE LEAVES TO GO WITH DR. BURNS, AND DR. ZUKE, THEY INTER AN OFFICE

Zuke

So what do you say Jolly would you like to work with us?

Jolly

It seems like something I would like to explore.  When can I start?

Burns

Tomorrow if you like.

Jolly

Tomorrow  then.

THE NEXT DAY JOLLY IS IN HER BATHING SUIT AND JUMPS INTO THE WATER WITH THE HALF DOLPHIN HALF WHALE SHE SWIMS WITH HIM AND SPLASH HIM PLAYFULLY

Jolly

( Rubbing him gently )  Tomorrow you start school and your teacher will be Jacob Wells.  I will work with you in the water and he will teach you math, history, english all sorts of subjects you will love it.  And guess what they are going to put a computer in here so we can carry on conversations with you.  Anything you say will be heard on the loud speaker.

THE FOLLOWING DAY JACOB WELLS ARRIVES AND IS PRESENTED TO THE REST OF THE STAFF AND THEN TAKEN TO SEE HIS NEW PUPIL

Wells

( To Zuke and burns )  This is quite a challenge, but I like challenges.  I will give you a pupil any university will be glad to have.

Burns

You will have a pupil like you never had before.

Zuke

I would like you to meet Jolly Green, she is the one that will spend a lot of time with your pupil. She shall we say will be reporting on parents night.

Wells

I am glad to meet you Ms. Green.  Do you like it here?

Jolly

So far it's been quite nice thank you.

Zuke

Now that we are all acquainted I must go and finish my work.

Wells

What is the pupil like?

Jolly

He is like a four year old child, curious and very bright.  And he likes to be the center of attention.

Wells

He will be getting a lot from me.  When I am in class I am a strict teacher.  But when I am out of class I like a good party. Do you?

Jolly

Depends if  the party is good.

Wells

I think a party takes place in your head.

Jolly

Is that your own theory or is it a proven fact?

(The baby fish begins to jump up and down in the water putting on a show to get the attention of Jolly.  She sees this and goes over to look at his performance he begins to glide on the water like the Swans do to impress their mates)

Jolly

Look at that!  Isn't it marvelous such grace and finess it's a beautiful thing to see.  I think it's a shame what they are going to use him for.

Wells

We just work for them.  It's not a good idea to worry about them. It's better to do a good job for them.  That's my philosophy. The other guys are working on similar projects.  I would rather see the United States win than the other side.

Jolly

No one wins in a nuclear war.

Wells

Would you like to have a drink with me?

Jolly

I think I will stay and watch for awhile. (Wells exists Jolly gets closer to the water and starts to splash)  You don't even have a name.  What should I call you?  It was really fantastic what you did here tonight.  (She repeats the word tonight) Tonight.  I can't call you tonight you have no phone.  Little joke there!  But I can call you Tonia.  That will be your name in memory of your performance tonight.  (she looks at him)  Do you like your name.  (he jumps out of the water and shook his head) I think it's a lovely name.

THE NEXT DAY TONIA BEGINS HIS STUDIES HE IS HOOKED UP TO A COMPUTER WHERE HE CAN BE HEARD.  HE STARTS WITH THE ALPHABET AND LEARNS IT IN A MATTER OF SECONDS.  AS THE DAY GOES BY TONIA'S INCREDIABLE SKILL TO LEARN FRUSTRATES HIS TEACHER

IN WASHINGTON GENERAL PENLOWE IS HAVING DINNER WITH HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN

Penlowe

(Talking to his eldest son)  The United States of America will find new and safe ways to transport it's weapons.  Cutting down on any chance of accidents or people demonstrating against the nuclear weapons.

Wife

I don't want you two getting into any arguments about the government.  This is a family time and lets enjoy it.

Penlowe

I am trying to communicate with Brad.  He thinks his old man is evil for working for the United States government.  (he reaches for the potatoes)  I was always able to put food on the table that's what a man does for his family, and this is what he gets. Strong sons to fight him.  (he looks at his daughter's fiancee) Now Mark here he knows what America is all about.  Being number one and we intend on staying that way.  Think you would enjoy living in Russia I doubt it very much.  Well if we don't fight to keep America the way it is us.  (he points to himself)  The Gods of this planet.  Hell the Russians don't even belive in God.  I sat down with Gorbachev watched him gobbled up the American food and drink.  And told me himself American food is better.

Brad

He never ate at McDonalds.  He was just trying to be kind.  I didn't know you spoke Russian.
